Exeter Rugby Club Deputy Chief Executive Kieron Northcott led the tributes at today's special Remembrance Service, which took place prior to the Premiership Rugby Cup clash between Exeter Chiefs and Bristol Bears.
Northcott was joined on the pitch ahead of kick-off by Director of Rugby, Rob Baxter, the two teams and match officials, as well as representatives from Bristol Rugby Club, Club Trustee Richard Cresswell (representing Exeter City Council), Captain Readwin (Britannia Royal Naval College), Lieutenant Colonel Evans-Jones (Royal Marines), Lieutenant Colonel D’Apice (6th Battalion Rifles) to commemorate those servicemen and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in battle.
Club chaplain Simon Atkinson once again oversaw the service, which included special mention to the 25 former Exeter Rugby Club players who were killed in battle during World Wars I and II.
Away from Sandy Park, Lt Grayson hauled down the Replenishment At Sea Flag aboard HMS Defender and replaced it with the Exeter Chiefs flag as part of their own onboard remembrance plans.
HMS Defender has been recently deployed on Operation Fortis and is currently on her way back to the UK.
The Last Post and Reveille were performed by Buglers Kortbeek and Carter of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines.
