Exeter Chiefs’ community department will be hosting two new events this summer, to take place in conjunction with the Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s.

Taking place at Sandy Park on the same weekend as the international rugby 7s tournament, July 7th and 8th, the events will give both adults and children the opportunity to get involved with playing rugby 7s.

The SW Rugby 7s returns on Saturday 7th July, but this year will take the new format of a mixed touch rugby tournament. Up to 20 squads will go head to head at Sandy Park to compete for the coveted title. Tickets are included in the entry fee so players can enjoy spectating as well as playing.

A brand new event will take place on Sunday 8th July, 7s Super Sunday. Based on the extremely popular Super Saturday format, groups of children will be able to take part in training sessions with the Exeter Chiefs community coaches and enjoy a day of international rugby 7s.

Speaking about the weekend, Community Development Manager Andrew Dudley said: “The Exeter 7s is a great event but we felt there was more we could do to involve the community.

“We have run the SW Rugby 7s for the past three years but wanted to make it more inclusive, so this year it will take the form of a mixed touch tournament. This means groups of men and women of all ability levels will be able to take part in what should be a really enjoyable day where participants are able to play and watch rugby.

“The Super Sunday event gives schools, rugby clubs and other groups the chance to enjoy a day of rugby which is perhaps outside of their traditional rugby season. Super Saturdays at Exeter Chiefs’ games this season have proved extremely popular, so this will be a great opportunity for those who have taken part already or those who have missed out to participate.”

Entry to the SW Rugby 7s is £120 per team of 12, which also includes day passes for the Saturday of the Exeter 7s. The tournament will be played on Sandy Park’s second pitch and following the event, there will be live music until late for all spectators and players to enjoy.

7s Super Sunday will cost £15 per child for groups of more than 10 and each group booking will also include one free adult pass for every 10 children booked. The hour-long sessions are open to children aged six to fourteen and will cover a range of skills including tackling, kicking and high ball catching and decision making.
