Jack Nowell faces a tense wait before discovering if he will be cleared to go to the Rugby World Cup, after it emerged that he will miss England's final warm-up match.
The Exeter Chiefs wing had hoped to recover from ankle surgery in time to play against Italy at St James' Park, Newcastle on September 6.
However, England head coach Eddie Jones has confirmed the Cornishman will not feature against the Azzurri and must prove that he will be available for England's World Cup opener against Tonga in Sapporo on September 22.
"Jack Nowell still won't be ready for Italy," said Jones. "We're confident he'll be ready for the World Cup. But we're going to have to know that he's going to be fit for the first two games. We'll work out when the appropriate time is to make that decision."
