Exeter Chiefs lock Nora Baltruweit has announced her retirement from professional rugby.

The 27-year-old previously played for Wasps, RC Aachen and RSV Köln in her native Germany and College Rifles RFC and Auckland Storm in New Zealand. She also represented Germany at both sevens and 15s since she was 15 and has been capped by the Barbarians, but has now made the decision to retire following three months with the club.

Before arriving at Sandy Park, Baltruweit spent three years rehabilitating a serious knee injury, including a spell for Les Lionnes Stade Bordelais in France. However, she feels has been unable to return to her previous form and has decided to call time on her professional rugby career.

She said: “I cannot really perform to the standard I am capable of. This really frustrates me, and I don’t think that’s fair for the players and the staff. Leaving the team behind is without question the hardest part of this after they were so welcoming and so fun to be around.”

Exeter Chiefs Women’s head coach Susie Appleby said: “We are sad to see Nora go. She was a welcome addition to our squad and a pleasure to have around. We wish her all the best for the future. She is super smart and has an amazing future ahead of her so we know she will be okay. She’s always welcome back here at Sandy Park.”
