Sexton joins Irish on loan

Exeter Chiefs can confirm that Jerry Sexton has today joined Aviva Premiership rivals London Irish on loan.

The young lock has been brought in to help bolster the Exiles squad until the end of the season.

Brought to Sandy Park initially on trial in August 2014, the 23-year-old – who is the brother of Irish fly-half Jonathan Sexton – did enough during that time to persuade head coach Rob Baxter to hand him a longer-term deal.

Sexton made his first debut for the Chiefs coming on as a replacement in an LV= Cup clash at home to Gloucester in November 2014 and has since gone on to make six appearances for Rob Baxter’s side.

This season game time for Sexton has been restricted to A League action and he has spent part of the campaign on loan at National League One outfit Cinderford.

Commenting on the move, Chiefs head coach Baxter said: “We’ve allowed Jerry to go on loan to London Irish until the end of the season, although we have a clause in the contract that will allow him to come back immediately if we need him.

“A bit like Ben White earlier in the week, it’s a good opportunity for him to join a good club and get some quality game time under his belt.”
