A brilliant day was had by pupils at a Paignton primary school as they enthusiastically cheered on the Exeter Chiefs to the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup.

The Oldway Primary School pupils had won the chance to go and see an Exeter Chiefs game after the school triumphed in the Torbay Primary Schools' Rugby World Cup in the autumn.

Before the game they were presented by complimentary tickets by Chairman and CEO of Exeter Chiefs Tony Rowe OBE before singing their hearts out in support of the Chiefs.

And their roars of support paid off as the Devon secured a thrilling 33-17 over the Ospreys, which combined with the Bordeaux-Begles winning 37-28 at Clermont Auvergne meant that the Chiefs reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time.

Teacher Claire Mitchell said: "This was a great opportunity for the children as most of them had never seen a live rugby match before.

"They were really excited to have this chance and we are very grateful to the Exeter Chiefs for the complimentary tickets. It makes the children feel special. They were delighted to go to the game and it is inspiring for children to see that they can achieve anything that they want to.

"A brilliant day was had by all the children and they saw lots of tries, which was good, and they brought them plenty of luck."

Mr Rowe, upon presenting the children with the tickets, told them to enjoy the game and said that he was keen to keep inspiring the next generation of rugby fans

Oldway had beaten St Margaret Clitherow in the final of the Torbay Primary Schools' Rugby World Cup legacy event at Paignton Community & Sports Academy back in October.
