Sandy Park is gearing itself up to welcome Europe’s elite rugby sevens stars as the countdown to the Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s is now just a month away.
Returning to the home of the Exeter Chiefs for a second successive year, Europe’s top 12 countries will battle it out for glory in the latest round of the hugely popular European Grand Prix Series over the weekend of July 9/10.
With many of the competing teams looking to hone their skills ahead of this year’s Olympics in Rio, the tournament offers the perfect environment in which to test tactics and devise game plans they hope will conquer in this summer’s sporting spectacle.
Already the 12 teams have had their first taste of GP Series with Russia seeing off France to claim the opening round victory in Moscow just a week ago.Great Britain – under the guidance of head coach Simon Amor – fielded two teams for that tournament and they will do the same for the remaining rounds in Exeter and Gydnia in Poland.
Bringing together the cream of sevens talent from across Britain, the Moscow event proved a decent starting point for the new-look teams, entitled the GB Royals and GB Lions.
After day one in the Russian capital, both sides finished with unbeaten records as they both collected three wins apiece.
Sadly, day two didn’t prove quite so successful as the Lions were undone 17-10 to Russia in the Cup semi-finals, but the Royals – who had lost to France in the quarter-finals – were able to go on and lift the Plate title, defeating Georgia 15-12.
Tickets for the two-day event in Exeter have already been selling well with individual tickets – priced at £20 – available for either Saturday or Sunday – or you can purchase a £30 weekend pass, which covers entry for both days.
