Exeter Chiefs Under-18s received a harsh lesson at the weekend against their London Irish counterparts as they went down 35-15 in their opening Premiership Under-18s fixture of the season.

On a tough afternoon at Topsham, the young Chiefs players lacked the accuracy and intensity against a very good Exiles side.

That said, Academy coach Rob Gibson believes his players will learn from the lessons and look forward to the upcoming games in December and January.

He said: "The whole programme is about development and identification of players, but as always winning is nice! It was a tough day for the boys, but there was much to be positive about and a lot to look forward to in the coming months."

Among the positives were the performances of fly-half Harvey Skinner, who kicked all of Exeter's points courtesy of five penalties, whilst England Under-17 players Charlie Wright and Marcus Street also impressed.

Gibson added: "Marcus is developing into a very good tight-head prop and his work around the park is constantly improving. His turnover tally of seven in the game is more akin to a flanker, whilst his breakdown efficiency is improving all the time. Also, Charlie's tackle rate was outstanding and contributed to eight turnovers."

Next up for the Chiefs will be against Bristol at Sandy Park on December 12 (kick-off 10:30am).
