Exeter Chiefs' Elvis Taione helped Tonga secure third spot in the Pacific Nations Cup after they beat Japan 31-20 in the third/fourth-placed play-off in Canada on Monday evening.

The hooker started the match at the Swangard Stadium, which also saw former Chief Fetu'u Vainikolo cap off a productive tournament with a second-half try.

Tries from Halani Aulika and Sonatane Takulua helped Tonga on their way in Burnaby, coupled with 16 points from the boot of Kurt Morath.

Avumu Goromaru booted 15 points for Japan, while replacement Hendrik Tui managed their only try of the game on 31 minutes.

In the final, another former Chief in the form of Josh Matavesi was on the scoresheet as the fly-half kicked seven points to help Fiji beat Samoa 39-29.
