Exeter Chiefs ace Henry Slade underlined his international credentials by scoring 13 points as the England Saxons overcame the Irish Wolfhounds 18-9 in Cork on Friday night.

The talented back opened the scoring by claiming the first of England's two tries on the night and by the break he had added two further penalties as the visitors led 11-3 at the turn.

Slade's opposite number Ian Madigan claimed a first half penalty, before adding two more after the break as the Wolfhounds threatened a comeback.

Slade added the additional two points to cap a fine night for the gifted No.10, who was being closely observed by England head coach Stuart Lancaster from the stands.

Post-match, Saxons coach Jon Callard said: "Stuart Lancaster talked to the squad on Monday and told the players he expected them to win and expected to be hurting that they've been left out of the senior squad. I'm very proud of our attacking rugby. The players gave everything against a good Irish side."
