Mumm helps Wallabies go top
By Mark Stevens
Former Exeter Chiefs skipper Dean Mumm capped a memorable week in his life by scoring a try as Australia moved to the top of Pool A at this year’s Rugby World Cup with a 65-3 victory over Uruguay at Villa Park.
The experienced Aussie marked captaining his country for the first time by scoring during the first half of this one-sided encounter in Birmingham.
His score came just days after he and wife Sarah celebrated the birth of a son in London - and has helped to put the Wallabies in fine fettle ahead of their crunch clash with England at Twickenham this Saturday.
With the host nation desperate to bounce back after their narrow loss to Wales in the same pool, Mumm and his team-mates fired an ominous warning to Stuart Lancaster’s side.
Tevita Kuridrani, Matt Toomua, Joseph Tomane, Ben McCalman (2), Drew Mitchell (2), Sean McMahon (2) and Henry Speight also dotted down, with Quade Cooper – who saw yellow for a dangerous tackle – converting five.
Mitchell's scores meant he becomes the joint-second highest try scorer in World Cup history.
