Irish heartache for Nowell

Jack Nowell’s return to England duty ended in disappointment as they were defeated 19-9 by Ireland in Dublin.

Recalled to Stuart Lancaster’s side following some notable displays for Exeter Chiefs in recent weeks, the 21-year-old was solid enough in both attack and defence - and even had a late try chalked off for a forward pass from Billy Twelvetrees.

However, the Cornishman could did little to thwart the home side, who sealed victory thanks to four penalties from fly-half Jonathan Sexton and a converted try from centre Robbie Henshaw.

England countered with three penalties from Bath playmaker George Ford, but having been outplayed in virtually every department, it’s Ireland who remain on course for a potential Grand Slam.

With trips to Wales and Scotland still to come, Ireland face a testing March if they are to claim a second consecutive Six Nations title, let alone a second Grand Slam in 60 years.

But after this record-equalling 10th successive Test victory, Joe Schmidt's men will travel with optimism, their status as the northern hemisphere's most effective team underlined in some style.

England, meanwhile, will have to reassess their options ahead of their next encounter against Scotland at Twickenham on March 14.
