Academy side win again
Exeter Chiefs Academy 10
Wasps Academy 0
Second half tries from Declan Matthews and Josh Caulfield proved enough for the Chiefs to see off rivals Wasps 10-0 in their latest Academy League game.
Having opened up their season with a fine win at Bristol, the Chiefs maintained their winning sequence in tough conditions at Topsham Rugby Club.
Up against a strong wind during the first half, the young Chiefs showed good endeavour, but a lack of accuracy and ability to preserve well-earned field position restricted the home side getting on the scoreboard.
Both sides defended extremely well and refused to have their lines crossed in the first half, but with the elements in their favour after the break it was the Chiefs who broke the deadlock with two quickfire tries.
Matthews claimed the opener when a Chiefs move, which started in their own half with a line-out drive, saw Caulfield break clear, gaining front foot ball before being brought down. The ball, however, was quickly recycled where the impressive Toby Papp gained a further 20 metres before accurate hands left Matthews with two men to beat before finishing in the left-hand corner.
Exeter's second try came from an attacking line-out drive and saw blindside flanker Caulfield charge over.
The Chiefs pushed hard to secure a bonus point win, but with Wasps desperate the scoreline remained at 10-0.
The Academy now face Harlequins at Sandy Park on Saturday, January 10 (2:30pm)
