Nowell helps England to victory
Exeter Chiefs star Jack Nowell helped a dominant England steamroller an abject Scotland 20-0 to retain the Calcutta Cup and get their Six Nations campaign back on track in impressive style.
The visitors would surely have won by more but for the dreadful state of the Murrayfield pitch, which clearly had an impact on Owen Farrell's goalkicking.
The Saracens fly-half missed three penalties he would usually expect to slot over, but he did convert tries in each half from Luther Burrell and Mike Brown as well as kicking a straightforward three-pointer.
Half-back partner Danny Care also contributed with a typically audacious first-half drop-goal, whist Scotland barely threatened England's line throughout the 80 minutes, with Greig Laidlaw's two first-half penalty misses the closest they came to troubling the scoreboard.
It is the first time since 1978 that Scotland have been kept scoreless at Murrayfield against England.
England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster admitted there was "a bit of frustration" that they did not win by a bigger margin despite bouncing back from their opening defeat by France in Paris.
"There were chances there that we didn't take and we definitely have regrets over the points we left out there," Lancaster said. "We played some really good stuff in difficult conditions. Scotland had to defend desperately."
However, Lancaster is already relishing the test against Ireland, who produced an impressive 26-3 win over defending Six Nations champions Wales.
"We're definitely out to win the tournament even after the loss to France," he added. "Huge credit to Ireland on a great win. They'll be coming to Twickenham full of confidence. It's a very important game and it'll be tough, but we're confident."
