Mitchell's try can't save the Welsh
By Mark Stevens
Exeter Chiefs prop Craig Mitchell may have celebrated his first international try, but he was unable to prevent Wales from slipping to a 30-22 defeat in their opening Six Nations game of the season against Ireland in Cardiff.
Used as a second half replacement for Adam Jones, the 26-year-old wasted little time in making his mark as he burrowed his way over from close range to help set-up a gripping finale to the game.
However, despite a much improved display after the break, the Welsh had given themselves too much to do at a packed Millennium Stadium after trailing 23-3 at the break.
"We're disappointed with the result," said Mitchell afterwards. "The first half was very frustrating for us, but we came in at half time and changed a few things and we were much better in the second half.
"To get on and get another cap was hugely pleasing because that was one of my aims for the year ahead. The past 12 months have been very tough what with two shoulder operations and a ruptured bicep, but I've worked hard with all the medical staff at Exeter to get back playing again.
"Playing for your country is always a great honour and to get my first try was also pretty special. However, I didn't really celebrate too much because it was more important to get back and start the game again because we still had a chance of maybe getting something at the end."
Mitchell will rejoin the Welsh camp again tomorrow as they prepare to gear up for next Saturday's trip to Paris when they face France at the Stade de France (5pm).
Mitchell added: "It's great to be back in the Welsh camp again as I've not been in it since the World Cup in New Zealand, but hopefully I can keep playing well and be part of the squad for the rest of the tournament.
"As I said, we're disappointed with the result on Saturday against Ireland, but our aim this week will be to put things right and put in a massive performance against the French."
